PUC (Public Utility Commission) A regulatory body in every state in the U.S. that governs public utilities within its jurisdiction such as electricity, gas, oil, sewer, water, transportation and telephone service. Some states call it the Public Service Commission (PSC). Services believe they have a low-cost answer to the plight of the Kashechewan Crees and other remote communities suffering chronic water quality problems. They are collaborating to develop a remote monitoring (protocol) remote monitoring - (RMON) A network management protocol that allows network information to be gathered at a single computer. Whereas SNMP gathers network data from a single type of Management Information Base (MIB), RMON 1 defines nine additional MIBs that provide a technology for water treatment plants using wireless links. The project, first started in September 2004, uses real-time video and audio links connected to a master control station. It will allow communities to share a trained and qualified operator who can monitor multiple treatment plants at a distance. The $1-million project includes contributions from the Ontario Innovation Trust, the PUC, Industrial Research Assistance Program with in-kind contributions in Sault College and the PUC. The system will be tested at a pilot-scale water treatment plant on a campus with a project completion date set for late March 2006. |
