Sarsgaard and Swank in 'Boys Don't Cry': March 28, 2000.This year's Hollywood issue isn't the first time Peter Sarsgaard and Hilary Swank, who are currently starring in the highly acclaimed films Kinsey and Million Dollar Baby, respectively, have appeared in the magazine. Five years ago our Hollywood issue's cover story was on Boys Don't Cry, in which both actors appeared and for which Swank earned the Oscar for Best Actress. Sarsgaard wasn't quoted by The Advocate at the time, but Swank, who played transgender youth Brandon Teena, testified to the film's power to move industry insiders and audiences alike. "When ... you're stretching yourself artistically, and then people respond in the way they do [to Boys Don't Cry]--it made me grow so much as a human being," said Swank. "If we're not doing that and we're not making people more aware, then we're probably not doing something right." |
