Tipping the Velvet is a 1998 lesbian novel written by Sarah Waters, set in the Victorian era. It was her debut novel. , Waters's hit debut, Fingersmith is also more complex, pouring its girl-girl romance onto a plot full of lying, cheating, bribery, insanity, pornography, and a public hanging or two. All the actors are strong, especially Sally Hawkins and Elaine Cassidy as the lesbian lovers, even if the production's budgetary constraints show in spots: A teeming teem 1 v. teemed, teem·ing, teems v.intr. 1.
