[Christian Hist.: NCE, 1412] See : Missionary , has appointed Santa Clara University President Paul Locatelli, S.J., as the Secretary for Higher Education for the Society of Jesus, (Jesuits), effective Jan. 1, 2007. As Secretary for Higher Education, Locatelli will convene meetings of the International Committee on Jesuit Higher Education (ICJHE), plan periodic meetings of Jesuit University Presidents, and encourage programs of collaboration among Jesuit universities. "He will provide me important perspectives on higher education," Kolvenbach said. Because this position is part-time, Locatelli will continue as president of Santa Clara University. The Jesuits are one of the largest religious orders of men in the Catholic Church. The Society of Jesus was founded in 1540 by St. Ignatius Loyola, a Basque nobleman and soldier. Today there are an estimated 20,000 Jesuits serving the Church in 112 nations on six continents. In the United States, there are 28 Jesuit colleges and universities and 46 high schools and an estimated 133 Jesuit institutions of higher education across the world.
