Santa Barbara News-Press Files Complaint against Susan Paterno for Trade Libel and Defamation.

, has filed a complaint in the Superior Court of California, County of Orange, against Chapman University's director of journalism, Susan Paterno, who is also a senior writer for the American Journalism Review (AJR), an academic journal published by the Philip Merrill College of Journalism The school began its rise under former dean Reese Cleghorn. The current dean is Thomas Kunkel.

The school awards B.A., M.A., M.J. and Ph.D. degrees in journalism. Undergraduates can focus on print, magazine, online, or broadcast journalism.

The complaint alleges that Ms. Paterno knowingly committed product disparagement In old English Law, an injury resulting from the comparison of a person or thing with an individual or thing of inferior quality; to discredit oneself by marriage below one's class.  (trade libel) and defamation against the Santa Barbara News-Press in her October/November AJR article entitled "Santa Barbara Smackdown." The lawsuit describes Ms. Paterno's article as "nothing but a biased, false and misleading diatribe" against the owner of the paper.

Ms. Paterno is accused of deliberate or reckless publication of false and defamatory material with the intent to harm the paper. The Lawsuit seeks unspecified compensatory and punitive damages, including attorney's fees.
