Sanmina-SCI acquires manufacturing locations from Alcatel.

, CA), an electronics contract manufacturer, has announced the asset purchase of Alcatel's (Paris, France) manufacturing facilities in Cherbourg, France; Gunzenhausen, Germany; and Toledo, Spain. Financial terms of the transaction, which includes a multi-year supply contract, were not disclosed. The transaction is expected to close by the summer of 2002.

The three manufacturing facilities of Alcatel comprise nearly one million sq. ft. and include an ISO-certified full system integration and test and order fulfillment Order fulfillment (in BE also: order fulfilment) is in the most general sense the complete process from point of sales inquiry to delivery of a product to the customer. Sometimes Order fulfillment  capabilities. Approximately 1,500 employees work at these locations and will become Sanmina-SCI employees.

The Cherbourg, France, facility produces a range of point-to-point microwave systems for world-wide applications in all frequency bands from 1.5 up to 38GHz using assembly and testing technologies, and will allow Sanmina-SCI to provide expanded services to its European customers in RF and microwave full system integration and test.

The Gunzenhausen, Germany, facility produces voice switching and data transmission systems for central office applications. It will provide Sanmina-SCI's German and other European customers with immediate access to a manufacturing facility with a broad range of electronics manufacturing services Electronic manufacturing services (EMS) is term used for companies that design, test, manufacture, distribute and provide return/repair services for electronic component and assemblies for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).  (EMS), and a specific focus on customers with high-end applications.

The Toledo, Spain facility produces a full range of wireline access products that deliver narrowband In communications, transmission rates up to T1 speeds (1.544 Mbps). The upper limit is moving target. At one time, narrowband meant 150 bps (that is 150 bits per second!). Then, the upper limit became 2,400 bps. Later, it moved to 64 Kbps. Contrast with wideband and broadband. , broadband and next-generation services to Alcatel's customers. The facility will serve as Sanmina-SCI's center of excellence for wireline access product manufacturing and test in Europe. The facility also provides Sanmina-SCI with an existing high technology manufacturing site featuring equipment and processes with a skilled group of employees.

This transaction is in line with Alcatel's strategy to focus on its core competencies A core competency is something that a firm can do well and that meets the following three conditions specified by Hamel and Prahalad (1990):
  1. It provides customer benefits
  2. It is hard for competitors to imitate
  3. It can be leveraged widely to many products and markets.
