A "Gladiators Of The Empire" novel by James Duffy, Sand Of The Arena is the exhilarating tale of Quintus Honorius Honorius, 384–423, Roman emperor of the West (395–423). On the death (395) of Theodosius I, the Roman Empire Roman Empire: see Rome; Byzantine Empire; Holy Roman Empire. was divided; Arcadius, the elder son, received the East, and Honorius, the younger son, received the West. This division proved to be a permanent one. The general Stilicho, as guardian of Honorius, at first controlled the government of the West and defended the empire against the Visigoths. in the year of 63 AD. As son to one of the richest men in Rome, Quintus lives in a life of ease and luxury until an impostor steals both his name, family and social status, rendering Quintus disposable to the slave trade. Readers will become enthralled as they follow Quintus through his journey of gladiatorial training and learn of the true brutality rejoiced in the everyday living of the later Roman age. An extraordinarily work of historical fiction, Sand Of The Arena is highly recommended reading, especially for intrigued by the Roman Empire.
