San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station to Test Emergency Siren System.


SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. -- The annual test of the Community Alert Siren System will be conducted Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2007, by Southern California Edison Southern California Edison (or SCE Corp), the largest subsidiary of Edison International (NYSE: EIX), is the primary electricity supply company for much of Southern California. Between 10 a.m. and noon, 51 sirens located in the communities around the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station The San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) is a nuclear power plant located on the Pacific coast of California. The 84 acre (340,000 m²) site is in the northwestern corner of San Diego County, south of San Clemente, and surrounded by the San Onofre State Park.  will be activated several times for approximately 3 minutes each time. The sirens will sound a continuous steady tone that distinguishes them from fire and police sirens.

The siren system is used by local government officials to notify the public to turn on radio and TV stations and listen for important public safety announcements in the unlikely event of a nuclear emergency requiring public action. It can also be used by local government to inform residents of other non-nuclear emergency conditions.

Flyers and other educational materials explaining the scheduled test are being distributed to help inform residents, businesses, and schools in the area about the test. Before and during the siren test, broadcasts on Orange County's primary Emergency Alert System radio station, KWVE 107.9, will inform the public of the test.
