San Miguel acquires Indonesian brewery.

According to a report in the Wall Street Journal the San Miguel Corp. has announced the acquisition of PT Delta Djakarta, an Indonesian company that makes Anker beer. According to analysts, this purchase should significantly bolster the Phillipine-based San Miguel's position in the Asian beer market.

San Miguel is already a major player in the Asian market, with control of 90 percent of the Phillipine market and a 60-percent share in Hong Kong. The company is ranked among the top 20 brewing companies in the world.

San Miguel's expansion into Indonesia is held to be significant because of the potentially large size of the country's food-and-beverage market. Although Indonesians currently consume only 0.5 liters of beer per capita annually, analysts believe that consumption could be increased dramatically as income rises. By comparison, annual beer consumption in the Phillipines stands at 25 liters per person.

Analysts noted that the purchase may bring increased competition between San Miguel and its primary Asian rival, the Singapore-based Asia Pacific Brewery Ltd. (APB). APB, in partnership with Heineken N.V., competes against San Miguel in many Asian markets.
