San Diego Engineering Council Honors Cubic Engineer, Training Technology.Business Editors SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 21, 2002 San Diego's engineering community recently recognized Dr. Kesh KESH Korporata Elektroenergjetike Shqiptare (Albanian Power Corporation) Bakhru for his contributions to both engineering and education. Fleet Science Center is a science museum in Balboa Park in San Diego, California. It was the first science museum to combine interactive science exhibits with a planetarium and an IMAX Dome (OMNIMAX) theater, setting the standard that most major science museums follow also attended. Dr. Bahkru, a scientist in Cubic's Advanced Technology division, received the "Outstanding Electrical Engineering Service Award" for both professional and academic accomplishments. A native of India, he has worked at Cubic for 25 years and also leads professional activities for the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) in the San Diego area. Dr. Bakhru is a Fellow of IEEE for his contributions to analysis and technology of jam-resistant communication systems, and holds a U.S. patent for the Video Codec, a device that allows compression and decompression of video images so they can be sent via email. Dr. Bakhru also has a strong commitment to education. A former San Diego State University professor, he now teaches evening classes at SDSU and in the past has taught at the University of San Diego in addition to his professional responsibilities for Cubic. He also works with local teachers to help boost the lagging math and science skills of K-12 students throughout San Diego. He has designed projects that help teachers convey basic math and scientific principles to students, and has also designed teacher education workshops. "By developing and leading teacher education programs in San Diego, Kesh Bakhru has a direct and continuing impact on improving math, science and technology education at numerous local schools," the council stated in presenting his award. "It is wonderful to receive recognition from peers and to know that what we are doing here at Cubic is valuable," Dr. Bakhru commented. "I see teaching and helping teachers as a way for me to give back what I have gained since I came to this country. I have received very positive feedback from the people I have worked with in education." Dr. Bakhru won the San Diego Engineering Council's "Engineer of the Year" award in 2000. The council selected Cubic's Air and Ground Combat Training Systems for the "Outstanding Electrical Engineering Project Award." It described Cubic's new joint and combined arms training systems as "interoperable, readily deployable and adaptable to tomorrow's weapons" and said they "directly enhance homeland defense and military effectiveness overseas by providing realistic training during joint and coalition force on force exercises." Cited as significant products under this award were Cubic's Air Combat Maneuvering Instrumentation System (ACMI), Joint Readiness Training Center -- Instrumentation System (JRTC-IS JRTC-IS Joint Readiness Training Center - Instrumentation System ) at Fort Polk, La., Multiple Integrated Laser Engagement System The Multiple Integrated Laser Engagement System or MILES is used by the United States Armed Forces and other armed forces around the world for training purposes. It uses lasers and blank cartridges to simulate actual battle. (MILES), Area Weapons Effects Simulator (AWES) and the Advanced Attack Helicopter Live Training System.
