The San Antonio River is a major waterway that originates in central Texas near San Antonio and follows a roughly southeastern path through the state.
 called the area Yanaguana, which means refreshing waters or clear waters. Spanish explorers and missionaries came upon the river in 1691, and because it was the feast day of St. Anthony, they named it San Antonio. In 1718, the city was officially founded when Mission San Antonio de Valero (the Alamo) was established.
