Samuel Adams Announces 2007 Homebrew Contest Call for Entries

BOSTON -- The three winning brews from the 2006 Samuel Adams([R]) American Homebrew Contest([TM]) are available nationally in the Samuel Adams([R])LongShot([R]) mix six-pack beginning in February 2007.  brewer and pub owner Don Oliver of California submitted an Old Ale, an unusual type of beer that can be aged and has a significant alcohol strength that usually tilts toward a sweeter, maltier balance. A mix of American, German, and Belgian malts, gives this full-bodied brew a malty malt´y

the balance or bitterness. This well-balanced brew has some residual sweetness in the finish.

Bruce Stott, of Massachusetts, entered a Dortmunder Export. This style's hallmark is balance. It has the malt profile of a Helles and the hop character of a Pilsner, and is slightly stronger than both. Bruce's original Dortmunder Export recipe caught the attention of the judges for its balance of bitterness and malt definition. He used a simple recipe consisting of just one malt, hops, yeast yeast, name applied specifically to a certain group of microscopic fungi and to commercial products consisting of masses of dried yeast cells or of yeast mixed with a starchy material and pressed into yeast cakes. , and water. This created a pale-gold lager with a blend of Pilsner maltiness and a mild hops aroma.

Not only are Samuel Adams employees knowledgeable about full-flavored craft beer, they've actually experienced brewing for themselves. Samuel Adams' annual company-wide homebrew competition encourages participants to experiment in the homebrewing process.

Employee winner Ken Smith of Colorado submitted a Boysenberry Wheat beer. Typical wheat beers have a light to moderate grain flavor, moderate malt sweetness, and low to moderate hop bitterness. Ken's twist on this style offers a refreshing, light taste, cereal crispness, and a subtle banana flavor with delicate traces of boysenberry. A national sales training manager, Ken has been with Samuel Adams for 11 years and started homebrewing when the company-wide homebrew competition began in 2001.
