Samsung Introduces Single-Chip Character-Type Dot Matrix LCD Controller/Driver IC; Provides a Complete Solution For Portable Applications.SAN JOSE San Jose, city, United States San Jose (sănəzā`, săn hōzā`), city (1990 pop. 782,248), seat of Santa Clara co., W central Calif.; founded 1777, inc. 1850. , Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 20, 1996--Samsung Semiconductor today announced the introduction of its new KS0073, a single-chip dot matrix LCD controller/driver IC. Ideal for such applications as cellular telephones, pagers, data terminals and remote control devices, the new device features a number of enhancements which make it unique in the marketplace. The KS0073 is a character style LCD controller/driver featuring a built-in character generator (1) Circuitry that converts data characters into dot patterns for a display screen. (2) A device that creates text characters that are superimposed onto video frames. (CG) and display ROM containing 240 5X8 fixed dot matrix characters with 34-common, 60 segment high-voltage (up to 13 volts) driver outputs. The addition of two extra commons gives the KS0073's on-board RAM the capability of storing up to 80 5X8 characters as well as 8 custom patterns and up to 96 custom icons. Built-in CGRAM (language) cgram - An ANSI C LL1 or LL2 grammar written in Scheme by Mohd Hanafiah Abdullah <napi@cs.indiana.edu>. A program (f-f-d.s) extracts the FIRST/FOLLOW/DIRECTOR sets. ftp://primost.cs.wisc.edu/pub/comp.compilers/cgram-ll1.Z. allows for a programmable character pattern. Associated with this programmability is the available mask option which allows high volume customers ( more than 100,000 units/year) to program their own icons and patterns at chip level. The new controller/driver is capable of displaying either two lines of 24 characters each, or four lines of up to 12 characters each with icons. Designed with a built-in selectable voltage doubler/tripler, the KS0073 can drive LCD displays with voltage requirements of from 3.0 to 13 volts. The device uses a single ended (hardware) single ended - An electrical connection where one wire carries the signal and another wire or shield is connected to electrical ground. This is in contrast to a differential connection where the second wire carries an inverted signal. power source and has a wide power supply operating voltage range of 2.7 to 5.5 volts. This makes the KS0073 useful in a variety of applications where the power supply voltage is dictated by the needs of other circuitry. By incorporating a 34-common, 60-segment split LCD driver along with voltage doubling/tripling circuitry, the KS0073 saves valuable board space over competing multi-chip solutions. Unique to the KS0073 are the bi-directional shift and shift per display line features which allow all characters to be displayed in reverse. Competitive Positioning The KS0073 is the latest in Samsung's line of three-volt capable LCD drivers. By offering the user a roster of competitive and often unique features in a single-chip solution, Samsung is expanding its commitment to offer manufacturers a viable source for these components. By offering an unparalleled level of support and service, Samsung has become a leading supplier to this market and with the timely introduction of enhanced products, it will remain an industry leader. William Cho, Samsung's Product market manager for LCD-IC products, "Samsung is committed to providing LCD controllers and drivers for the portable market. The sheer volume of devices needing small LCD displays is staggering, and Samsung will continue to provide innovative and cost effective solutions to meet this ever growing need." Pricing and Availability The KS0073 is available as both a bare die See bare chip. and as a packaged part. The device can be supplied in either a 128-lead PQFP (Plastic Quad Flat Package) Refers to many varieties of QFP chip packages, which are molded in plastic. See QFP. package or TAB (Tape Automated Bonding A process that places bare chips onto a printed circuit board (PCB) by attaching them to a polyimide film. The film is moved to the target location, and the leads are cut and soldered to the board. The bare chip is then encapsulated ("glob topped") with epoxy or plastic. See chip on board. ). Both are available now, and pricing is set at $3.75 each in quantities of 10,000 units for the PQFP part. Please contact Samsung for TAB and die pricing.
