Samsung Electronics Now Producing Over 3 Million OneNAND Flash Memory Units a Month.

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., the leader in advanced semiconductor technology, today announced that it now is producing more than three million units of its OneNAND(TM) Flash fusion memory per month, an 86 percent increase in production volume from four months ago. The monthly volume amounts to the equivalent of about 2.9 billion megabits (Mb).

"OneNAND is the fastest growing product line of any device in the Samsung memory portfolio. It has met with an extremely positive reception by offering sharply higher performance and significantly lower overall cost than other memory solutions," said Don Barnetson, associate director, Flash marketing, Samsung Semiconductor, Inc.

Three of the top five wireless equipment manufacturers in the world now use OneNAND in volume production handsets. In addition, OneNAND is being specified in more than 80 mobile designs.

The popular device is the first fusion memory chip, a device that features a single-level-cell NAND core with SRAM and logic elements to emulate a NOR Flash interface. While initially targeted at the handset market, OneNAND now also is easily adaptable to a wide range of embedded applications using integration software from Datalight Corporation. Applications include Industrial, automotive, security and networking, as well as mobile consumer electronic (CE) devices beyond handsets.

"The market for fusion NAND memory can't help but grow, as pressure mounts for ways to lower the cost of NOR Flash while increasing multimedia mobile performance and simplifying portable design -- a scenario to which fusion Flash is particularly well-suited," said Alan Niebel, CEO, Web-feet Research, Monterey, CA. According to Web-feet, the worldwide NOR-replacement market for 128Mb and higher density Flash in non-handset applications alone will grow from $1.5B in 2005 to $2.2B in 2007, while a surging global handset market for NAND Flash is expected to reach $3.3 billion by 2007.

OneNAND provides a sustained data "read" speed of 108 MByte/s, four times faster than conventional NAND Flash memory, and a "write" speed of 10 MByte/s, more than 60 times faster than multi-level-cell NOR Flash memory. OneNAND can store up to 250 sequential photographs from a five-megapixel camera phone without any click-to-click delay between images.

OneNAND uses up to 60 percent less energy than competing NOR memory and is available in densities of 128Mb to four gigabits. It has been optimized to work with virtually all popular mobile operating systems, including Windows CE and Mobile 5.0, Symbian and Linux.
