Samsung Develops High-Density Memory that Greatly Simplifies Handset Design.

SEOUL, South Korea -- Samsung Electronics Samsung Electronics (SEC, Hangul:삼성전자; KSE: 005930, KSE: 005935, LSE: SMSN, LSE: SMSD) is a South Korean multinational corporation and the world's largest and leading electronics and information technology company.  Co., Ltd., the world leader in advanced semiconductor technology, today announced that it has developed a four gigabyte (GB) MCP (1) See Microsoft certification.

(2) (MultiChip Package) A chip package that contains two or more chips. It is essentially a multichip module (MCM) that uses a laminated, printed-circuit-board-like substrate (MCM-L) rather than ceramic (MCM-C).
(multi-chip package) for mobile phones that for the first time forgoes the need for an external memory card slot A socket for inserting a printed circuit board or a PC Card (CardBus card). See PC Card.  and also eliminates having to develop interface software for all types of NAND (Not AND) A Boolean logic operation that is true if any single input is false. Two-input NAND gates are often used as the sole logic element on gate array chips, because all Boolean operations can be created from NAND gates. See flash memory.  memory.

Samsung's new moviMCP is a multi-chip package carrying an embedded (moviNAND[TM]) memory solution, which provides a simple-to-design memory package that satisfies the high-speed data transmission needs of mobile phones, while fully supporting the communication features within the handset.

"We've now perfected a memory chip that allows handset manufacturers to significantly reduce development time while deploying an extremely robust design that will result in higher performance for smaller phones, with higher storage capacities," said Jim Elliott, director, flash marketing director, Samsung Semiconductor, Inc.

The new moviMCP combines a 4GB embedded memory card, which consists of two 16Gb (gigabit) NAND flash See flash memory.  chips and a controller, together with a 1Gb mobile DRAM chip to support the processor and a 2Gb NAND flash chip for general handset operations. This provides a total memory capacity of 35Gbs.

Samsung's use of an eMMC interface, the MultiMediaCard Association (MMCA (MultiMediaCard Association, Beaverton, OR, www.mmca.org) A membership organization founded in 1998 to promote the MultiMediaCard (MMC) storage module used in cellphones, PDAs and other small handheld devices. ) standard for embedded memory, resolves the design complexity inherent in the functional differences of the various types of NAND flash, by integrating an embedded controller Controller circuitry built into a device or on the main system board, in contrast with a removable card or module. , into the moviMCP. This removes the need to develop interface software for each type of NAND flash.

The new moviMCP stacks several memory functions vertically to enable a small footprint. Its high density eliminates the need for having to also provide an external expansion slot.

Samsung's moviMCP is currently available for OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) The rebranding of equipment and selling it. The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and  sampling.

According to market research firm iSuppli, the 3G mobile phone market - which is the main target for Samsung's new moviMCP - is expected to reach 392 million units in 2007 and show an approximately 40 percent

compounded annual growth rate from 2007 through 2010.
