Samsung Announces Mass Production of DDR2; Industry's First 1 GigaByte DDR2 DIMM Offers High Speed and Low Power Necessary for Next-Generation PCs and Servers.

Business Editors/High-Tech Writers

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 24, 2003

Samsung Semiconductor, Inc., the world's leader in advanced semiconductor memory technology, today moved to make DDR (Double Data Rate) Refers to an SDRAM memory chip that increases performance by doubling the effective data rate of the frontside bus. For more details, see SDRAM.

"DDR2 is a viable technology and will play an important role in enabling the development of a new generation of feature-rich, high-speed gaming PCs, servers and network computers," said Tom Quinn, Samsung's US Vice President of Memory Sales and Marketing. "Samsung is ready to meet the requirements of high-speed, low-power memory solutions for tomorrow's chipsets."

The availability of a DDR2 memory solution in production volume, which features a 4-bit pre-fetch delivering twice the external bandwidth of DDR solution for the same internal frequency, will speed the industry's transition from DDR. The 1.8-volt device features a high-speed data transfer rate of 533Mbps that can be extended to 667Mbps for networks and special system environments.

Samsung first shipped engineering samples of a JEDEC The division of the Electronic Industries Alliance (EIA) that deals with semiconductor standards (officially, the JEDEC Solid State Technology Association of EIA). JEDEC was formed in 1958 when the Joint Electron Tube Engineering Council (JETEC) split into two Joint Electron Device  standard compliant 512Mb DDR2 SDRAM to major chipset developers last May.

In 2001, JEDEC presented Samsung with an award recognizing the company's leadership and pioneering role in the development of DDR technology as well as its contribution to the standardization of DDR-SDRAM DDR-SDRAM - Double Data Rate Random Access Memory . Samsung currently has more industry-validated DDR SDRAM devices than any other manufacturer.
