Samichlaus honors St. Nicholas' arrival

One pundit of the beer world has suggested that Samichlaus Bier "would best be dispensed from small barrels suspended from the necks of mountain-rescue dogs." Though the allusion to this potent brew's brandy-like flavor is apt, beer lovers can enjoy this beer without getting lost in the Alps.

Introduced to America in 1986 by Phoenix Imports, Samichlaus has become a favorite of strong beer lovers throughout the country. Recognized by the Guinness Book of Records as "the strongest beer in the world," Samichlaus has more going for it than sheer muscle, according to its importer.

Brewed just one day a year, on December 6 - St. Nicholas Day in Switzerland - and aged 10 months before bottling, Samichlaus is a rare product.

Brewed to the Reinheitsgebot purity law, the only ingredients are a special yeast which must stand up to the brew's high alcohol content, barley malt, hops and water. Specially-selected two-row summer barley is imported from Germany, and two varieties of Hallertau hops are used to balance bitterness, flavor and aroma.

The 1990 bottling of Samichlaus, brewed in December, 1989, will arrive in America the first week in November, and will be on shelves before Thanksgiving.
