Sami parliament.


The Swedish Government has given the go-ahead for the planning of a new parliament building in Kiruna Kiruna (kē`rünä), city (1990 pop. 20,470), Norrbotten co., N Sweden. The northernmost city in Sweden, it is the center of the Lapland iron-mining region.  for the indigenous Sami people The Sami people (also Sámi, Saami, Lapps, sometimes also Laplanders) are the indigenous people of northern Europe inhabiting Sápmi, which today encompasses parts of northern Sweden, Norway, Finland and the Kola Peninsula of Russia. . The Chairman of the Sami Government, Lars-Anders Baer, commented, 'This is an important step. To have our own parliament building can contribute to holding us together, but also function as a link with Sweden--a sign of reconciliation.'

A conference to mark the end of the Decade of the World's Indigenous People was held in Stockholm recently. It aimed both to emphasize progress made and to get to grips with outstanding issues which affect aboriginal peoples, such as land and water rights. Speakers included Ann-Christin Nykvist Ann-Christin Nykvist, born in Stockholm April 4, 1948, is a Swedish Social Democratic politician. She was Minister for Agriculture, Food and Consumer Affairs in the Cabinet of Göran Persson. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in economics from the Stockholm School of Economics. , Sweden's Minister of Agriculture, and Sir Douglas Graham, former Justice Minister of New Zealand New Zealand (zē`lənd), island country (2005 est. pop. 4,035,000), 104,454 sq mi (270,534 sq km), in the S Pacific Ocean, over 1,000 mi (1,600 km) SE of Australia. The capital is Wellington; the largest city and leading port is Auckland. , who spearhead ed a process of restoration to the Maori.
