Same footprint, but gutted and reshuffled.

TYPICAL OF MANY ranch-style houses built in the '60s, this one was on a great lot with room for expansion, but it was dark and chopped up into too many small rooms.

The architect set out to transform it into a place that would suit him and his family. Staying within the original foundation, he gutted the entire house, reshuffled the plan, and refinished all interior surfaces. New gypsum board walls and ceilings and new beech floors went in throughout.

The results are, as juror Jones put it, "a dynamic transformation for very limited structural changes." And, he said, "finding architecture in the frequent and ordinary is commendable."

The architect also added a 775-square-foot recreational pavilion next to the existing swimming pool, reworked the entry-parking area, and replaced all the windows with custom steel sash.

Ehrlich commented, "A tract house without pedigree has been given a great sense of contemporary style."

Goldstein added, "The house was transformed from an ordinary series of closed spaces to an open, generous flow of rooms."

"One thing evident in the entry binder and confirmed during follow-up photography is the concern for detail," Morrall said. "This tailored house with clean lines and a taut finish belies its humble beginnings."
