Salton Sea Public Workshops Announced.SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The Resources Agency will hold statewide public workshops on the Salton Sea Salton Sea (sôl`tən), saline lake, 370 sq mi (958 sq km), northern part of the Imperial Valley, SE Calif.; 232 ft (71 m) below sea level. The workshops are sponsored by the California Resources Agency The California Resources Agency is a top-level executive branch agency in the state government of California. The institution and jurisdiction of the Resources Agency is provided for in California Government Code sections 12800 and 12805, et seq. , the Department of Water Resources, and the Department of Fish and Game. The state's Draft Programmatic Environmental Impact Report (Draft PEIR PEIR Prince Edward Island Regiment (Canadian Forces Reserve) ), includes eight alternatives for sea rehabilitation and a no action option. The alternatives consider agricultural, recreational and economic issues. A 90-day public comment period is underway and ends January 16, 2007. The Salton Sea is California's largest lake, 25 miles long and 15 miles wide. It is located in Riverside and Imperial counties. It was formed in 1905 after an accidental levee levee (lĕv`ē) [Fr.,=raised], embankment built along a river to prevent flooding by high water.
