Salon wins prize.

A hair salon has won a prize for being accessible to disabled customers.

Janet Maitland of Janet Maitland Hair Excellence, in Durham City, picked up the top prize in the Health, Hair & Beauty category of the Access All Areas Awards, organised by the Department for Work & Pensions.

Janet worked with Sandra Snowdon, head of education, and Peter McDermott, consultant on equal opportunities, to redesign her Gilesgate premises, ensuring ease of access for all customers. Work undertaken included the installation of ramps, wider doorways, a disabled toilet and a portable washbasin for clients who cannot use standard backwash chairs.
