Sales tax exemption.


Backers of a state sales tax sales tax, levy on the sale of goods or services, generally calculated as a percentage of the selling price, and sometimes called a purchase tax. It is usually collected in the form of an extra charge by the retailer, who remits the tax to the government.  exemption on manufacturing equipment are hoping that word of an unanticipated $7.5 billion revenue windfall to state coffers will aid their cause.

Ever since the manufacturers' tax credit was eliminated four years ago, the California Manufacturers and Technology Association has been pushing for either its reinstatement or the enactment of alternative tax exemptions.

 Alberto Torrico Alberto Torrico has been a member of the California State Assembly since December of 2004 succeeding the term-limited Assemblyman John Dutra. He represents the 20th Assembly District which includes Fremont, Newark, Union City and Milpitas among other cities in the East Bay. , D-Newark. The bill calls for a 10-year state sales tax exemption on purchases of equipment used in the manufacturing, high tech, biotech and nanotech industries.

In past years as the state has faced record budget deficits such proposals were dead on arrival. But at the Torrico bill's first hearing earlier this month, the CMTA achieved mixed results.

Assembly Revenue and Taxation Committee chairman Johan Klehs Johan Klehs is a California state politician. He is a Democrat. He represented California's 14th Assembly District from 1982 until 1994. He served as a member of the State Board of Equalization from 1994 until 2002 when he was termed out and lost the Democratic primary for State , D-San Leandro, proposed narrowing the bill's scope to fewer categories, but the committee did not kill the bill. The committee is expected to take the measure up again in the next few weeks as part of budget negotiations.
