Summary

Demand for tourism services improves on 2004

Current value sales growth accelerated in all sectors during 2005, except travel accommodation, where sales stagnated. Thus, the travel and tourism market managed to outperform the overall economy in Germany, which saw lower GDP GDP (guanosine diphosphate): see guanine.  growth compared to 2004. Growth in incoming tourism, the high priority given to holidays by German consumers and a recovery in business travel were cited as the main factors underpinning the robustness of the market.

Arrivals grow ahead of departures

Arrivals increased in the mid single digits in 2004, as the popularity of Germany as a destination for both business and leisure travel increased. This was accompanied by an increase in incoming tourism receipts, although receipts grew by a slightly slower rate as trips are getting shorter. International departures were up by 2%, while outgoing expenditure was up slightly. Although outgoing expenditure grew more slowly than incoming receipts, Germans remain net spenders, with outgoing expenditure almost 2.5 times as high as incoming receipts

Chained hotels main growth driver in travel accommodation sector

Travel accommodation sales were up marginally in 2005, similarly to 2004. The sector's performance was sustained mainly by more foreign arrivals, while domestic demand remained lacklustre lacklustre or US lackluster

, especially from leisure guests. However, domestic demand from business travellers was reported to have picked up somewhat in 2005, although less than had been hoped for. Chained hotels were the main growth driver, benefiting from greater brand recognition, competitive prices and the stronger impact of advertising compared to independent players.

Low-cost airline boom continues, car rental recovers

Despite some expectations to the contrary, the low-cost airline boom continued unabated in 2005, pushing up growth in the transport sector into the double digits Double Digits was a pricing game on the American television game show, The Price Is Right. Played from April 20, 1973 through May 18, 1973's show, it was played for a car and used small prizes. . Growth of air transport was further boosted by stronger sales of holiday packages which include flights. Growing saturation resulted in much slower growth for cruises, although at a growth rate in the mid single digits, this subsector is still regarded as dynamic. Long-distance rail travel continued the improvement that began in 2004, with growth underpinned by more attractive special offers. Increased demand from the business sector and more tourist bookings brought about a bounce back of the car rental market that began in 2004 and continued more clearly in 2005.

Travel retail sales growth sustained, thanks to early-booking offers and a little help from the weather

Growth in sales of package holidays underpinned the good performance of the travel retail sector, which increased in the low-mid single digits in 2005. After the success in 2004, tour operators continued their strategy of attractive early booking offers, whilst bookings in 2005 were also helped by the second consecutive cool and rather rainy summer. Within the travel retail sector, the share of flight-only business declined due to competition from the Internet, while within holiday packages, there was a trend away from fixed packages towards dynamic packages.

, but on-line bookings are also increasing through traditional airlines, such as Lufthansa. Furthermore, there has been a strong increase in bookings of railway tickets. Internet bookings are also increasingly strongly in the car rental market, driven in equal measure by low-cost offerings and full price car rentals. Chained hotels also generated a strong increase in Internet bookings in the hotel sector, although consumers continue to prefer to make reservations over the phone. Similarly, the Internet is first and foremost a source of information rather than a medium for bookings in the travel retail sector, despite strong growth from a low base in 2005.
