Salem-Keizer blanks Ems.

Byline: The Register-Guard

KEIZER - Salem-Keizer scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the first inning, but added 10 additional runs in an 11-0 shutout victory over Eugene on Wednesday in a Northwest League baseball game.

The Volcanoes' win - their fourth consecutive against the Emeralds - builds their West Division lead to nine games over Eugene.

With two outs in the bottom of the first, Matt Downs doubled and later scored on a RBI single by Chad Rothford to give Salem-Keizer a 1-0 lead.

The first four Volcanoes batters reached base in the second inning, with Sharlon Schoop and Shane Jordan each hitting RBI singles before Brock Bond added a run-scoring fielder's choice, pushing the lead to 4-0.

Salem-Keizer added five runs in the fourth, beginning with a one-out bases-loaded RBI single by Bond. Downs followed with a bases-loaded walk before Rothford struck out. Garrett Baker then walked with the bases loaded and Andrew Davis hit a two-run single to right field, boosting the lead to 9-0.

The Volcanoes tacked on a pair of runs in the sixth on a two-run single by Davis.

Eugene failed to capitalize with a runner in scoring position in the third, fourth and fifth innings. Eric Sogard led off the fourth with a double and Keoni Ruth did the same in the fifth.

Every Volcanoes player who batted had a hit except Schoop, who was 0-for-2. Each of their first six hitters had at least one RBI, led by Davis with four, and Davis and Jordan each had three hits.

Salem-Keizer starting pitcher Craig Clark allowed only three hits and two walks, striking out five in five innings to record the victory.
