Sakata Seed to Begin Marketing Biosensor for Soil Diagnosis.

The new biosensor, called Soil Dock, evaluates the levels of good or bad bacteria in soil, and predicts the likelihood of soil diseases. The Soil Dock can complete a diagnosis in 30 minutes per sample. Five different diagnosis filters are available: two types for soil diseases and three types for effective microorganisms Effective Microorganisms is also called "EM technology" by the proponents of this concept. "EM technology" is a scientifically unconfirmed method to improve soil quality and plant growth using a mixture of microorganisms consisting mainly of lactic acid bacteria, purple bacteria, .

Sakata Seed will market the new product on a made-to-order basis. It will start accepting orders on July 3 for shipments beginning in December. Prices are set at 3,150,000 yen ($28,300) for the biosensor and 21,000 yen ($190) for 10 diagnosis filters (2 of each type).
