Ivan Merz Ivan Merz (born on December 16, 1896 in Banja Luka - died on May 10, 1928) was a Croatian lay academic, beatified by Pope John-Paul II on Sunday, June 22, 2003 at the time of a visit of Banja Luka (Bosnia). Ivan Merz was the promoter of the liturgical movement in Croatia. , a Catholic intellectual dedicated to promoting the faith among young people, was beatified in Banja Luka Banja Luka (bän`yä l`kä), city (1991 pop. 142,644), in NE Bosnia and Herzegovina, on the Vrbas River. , Bosnia-Herzegovina. Merz died in 1928 at age 32.

Marija Petkovic, founder of the Daughters of Mercy in Croatia and known for her commitment to the poor, was beatified in Dubrovnik, Croatia. The pope said she reminded him of all the women of Croatia who have suffered loss in the violence of recent decades.
