Meanwhile, it is possible that John Paul II may be declared a martyr, according to The Tablet (U.K.), because of the gunshot wound he suffered in a foiled assasination attempt in 1981 and in light of his long-term struggle with Parkinson's disease.

Finally, the process of beatification has begun for Salvadoran Archbishop Oscar Romero, who was assasinated at the height of El Salvador's civil war in 1980.
