Safeway Announces Retail Management Change.

:SWY SWY Safeway, Inc. (stock symbol) ) announced that Karl Schroeder Karl Schroeder (born September 4, 1962) is a Canadian author. He was born into the Mennonite community in Brandon, Manitoba, and now lives in Toronto with his wife and daughter. , most recently President of the company's Eastern Division, will succeed Frank Calfas as President of the company's Northern California Northern California, sometimes referred to as NorCal, is the northern portion of the U.S. state of California. The region contains the San Francisco Bay Area, the state capital, Sacramento; as well as the substantial natural beauty of the redwood forests, the northern  Division. As announced, Mr. Calfas will join Safeway's centralized marketing team, as President, Marketing Operations, reporting directly to Brian Cornell, Executive Vice President, Chief Marketing Officer.

Mr. Schroeder joined Safeway 28 years ago in the company's Phoenix Division. After managing several stores in Arizona, he was promoted to district manager and the same position later in Northern California and Hawaii. He was named Vice President, Retail Operations for Safeway's Northern California Division in 1996. He joined the corporate retail operations team as Vice President in 2001 and was promoted to Senior Vice President in 2002. Mr. Schroeder was named President of the Eastern Division in 2002.

"Karl's strong record for consistently delivering solid results will serve him well in his new capacity in Northern California," said Steve Burd, Safeway's Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer. "His previous experience in Northern California makes him a perfect fit for the job."

Mr. Calfas began his career with Safeway in 1978 in the company's Northern California Division where he worked his way through a range of retail assignments. After serving as Director of Retail Support at Safeway's corporate office, Mr. Calfas was promoted to Vice President of Retail Operations at Vons in Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  following Safeway's acquisition of that company in 1997. During 2000 Mr. Calfas served as Executive Vice President of Groceryworks, Safeway's on-line/home delivery business. He was promoted to President of Safeway's Northern California Division in 2001.

"This is a crucial senior job in our centralized marketing organization," said Mr. Cornell. "Frank's exceptional business instincts and experience managing one of our largest retail divisions make him the ideal choice." In his new capacity, Mr. Calfas and his team will serve in a coordinating and planning role between the company's centralized marketing group and its retail divisions.

Hank Cominiello, Vice President, Retail Operations in the Eastern Division will serve as acting Eastern Division President until a permanent replacement is named.
