. The deal requires annual antiharassment training for teachers and peer training for all freshmen--and that each school have a compliance officer to ensure students' complaints are heard.

The settlement is a result of a lawsuit lawsuit: see procedure; tort.  filed by former student George Loomis and the Gay-Straight Alliance Network. In 2001 Loomis told The Advocate that a teacher had made antigay comments about his earring earring, a personal adornment, sometimes an amulet, worn attached to the ear lobe. Since prehistoric times the ear has been pierced for the insertion of the earring; certain primitive tribes distort the lobe with plugs several inches in diameter or with heavy stones. . When Loomis complained to administrators, he said they took no action. The agreement includes $130,000 for Loomis.

School officials in Nevada's Washoe County endorsed a settlement of their own on August 6 in response to a suit filed by former student Derek Henkle. While the agreement has less-explicit requirements to curb further antigay harassment at the district's schools, it will award Henkle $451,000 if approved by the board.
