Sachsen cuts a new wake. (Digest).Blohm + Voss Blohm + Voss is a German shipbuilding and engineering works. It was founded on April 5, 1877, by Hermann Blohm and Ernst Voss as a general partnership named Blohm & Voss. A shipyard was built on the island of Kuhwerder, near the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, covering 15,000 handed over the first F 124 frigate, the Sachsen, directly to the Federal German Office for Defence Technology and Procurement, which will in turn hand it over to the German Navy in December 2003 for official commissioning. The three F 124 class ships will be powered by two diesel engines and one gas turbine, and are slated to replace the three Lutjens class 103 B destroyers which were built 30 years ago for the German Navy by the United States. The 5600-tonne displacement, Meko-type Sachsen will be armed with Ram, Harpoon harpoon (härp n`), weapon used for spearing whales and large fish.
