SYRIA - Profile - Ghassan Al Rifai & Mohammed Al Atrash.

Rifai, a prominent economist, came directly to the cabinet from Washington where he was adviser to the World Bank. But he was told upon taking up the ministerial position he was going to be responsible to Al Hussain. Rifai's predecessor, Dr. Mohammed Al Imady, used to be more powerful as minister of economy and foreign trade.

Atrash was vice-governor of the Central Bank of Syria in the early 1970s. Later he became an executive director at the IMF in Washigton. As finance minister he received less power than his predecessor, Dr. Mohammed Khalid Al Mohaini.
