SYNTREX TECHNOLOGIES ANNOUNCES INDUSTRY'S FIRST DYNAMIC REMOTE NETWORK MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

SAN FRANCISCO and SAN DIEGO, April 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Syntrex Technologies, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Phoenix Technologies, Inc., and a technology leader in integration services, announced today the industry's first dynamically linked remote network management system. Syntrex made the announcement jointly at the Association of Banyan Users International (ABUI) Conference in San Francisco and at the Association of Legal Administrators (ALA) Conference in San Diego. The Remote Network Management System delivers on Syntrex's announcement at the fall ABUI show, when it stated the company's intention to establish a Network Management and Support Center (NMSC).
Network integrators have traditionally monitored remote networks via dedicated links between their central engineering centers and customer premises. Now, Syntrex's Network Alert Monitor initiates a dial-up session to its NMSC when, and only when, it detects a network event. This is the first time a network integrator is performing this function dynamically. "The benefit to all customers is cost savings," commented Rick Ragucci, Syntrex vice president of technology. "In the past, customers could only get this type of support over dedicated, long- distance links, up 24-hours-a-day with the six-figure price tag that accompanied it. Syntrex delivers the same level of support at less than a fraction of the cost," Ragucci added.
Installed at Thompson & Knight, a prestigious law firm located in Dallas, the Network Alert Management System "has already paid for itself," according to Terry Parnell, director of information services for the firm. The system relays daily status, warnings and problem alerts directly from the firm's offices to the Syntrex NMSC in Eatontown, N.J. Warning and problem alerts are immediately reviewed and analyzed by engineers from Syntrex's Network Engineering and Design Center (NEDC), who maintain detailed knowledge of each individual site being monitored using the on-line configuration database. Preventative and corrective actions are immediately communicated by a Syntrex engineer to the customer's local network administrator.
Syntrex currently monitors Thompson & Knight's 400 user, 14 server, 4 site VINES network via an on-site monitoring system which runs Syntrex's suit of network monitoring software products. The first release of this system is compatible with Banyan VINES(R). Subsequent versions will operate within the Novell(R) NetWare(R), UNIX(R) and various Microsoft(R) environments. The system for Thompson & Knight delivers: daily updates of the network's configuration; real-time scanning for network failures and threshold alerts; security scanning and over a dozen other functions.
One of the system's first preventative actions at Thompson & Knight was to log a dual server StreetTalk(TM) failure, upon notification by the alert monitor and prior to the customer experiencing any major problems. A Syntrex engineer notified the Thompson & Knight network administrator of the failure, and then provided support in isolating and resolving the problem. "Our servers were quickly up and running. This is exactly why we purchased this service from Syntrex," added Parnell.
The Network Alert Management Service is an add-on option to Syntrex's Premium Telephone Support Service. The Premium Service includes unlimited NMSC telephone support, the Syntrex-on-Site (SOS) technical Bulletin Board and subscriptions to Wellesley Information Services VINES Observer, VINES Technical Bulletin & Problem Alert Service and VINES Bulletins Library.
