As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 57,502. The city incorporated in 1955 from the former Van Buren Township and is named for inventor Charles F. , has announced that the company's patent portfolio grew more in the last 18 months than at any other time in the company's 10-year history.

Within the last 18 months, the company has had 5 new patents issued in the U.S. and Australia.

The five patents include two issued in the U.S. for the company's implantable glucose biosensor A device that detects and analyzes body movement, temperature or fluids and turns it into an electronic signal. See lab on a chip and data glove.

"We have been very pleased with the progress made by Dr. Leland Clark, Dr. Elmo Blubaugh and other company scientists that has resulted in a significant increase in our patent portfolio," said Robert Nicora SYBD president. "Our portfolio, which now contains a total of 18 issued patents, two submitted applications and several applications in preparation, provides support for our plans to move into disease-specific, proof-of-principle animal studies in the next few months."

SYBD currently is developing three products: Oxycyte(TM), a perfluorocarbon-based blood substitute and therapeutic oxygen carrier; Fluorovent(TM), a perfluorocarbon liquid ventilation product; and an implantable glucose biosensor for continuous monitoring of blood glucose levels blood glucose level,
