SYNERGY'S HOPES FOR A TITLE DASHED, BUT ALL IS NOT LOST.

The 6-foot-8 Budinger, a member of the U.S. Junior National team who was selected Volleyball Magazine's National High School Player of the Year, led Seaside to two victories over Synergy in the four-day, 36-team event.

Another top-three finish: Synergy's second-place finish gave coach Walt Ker's group three top-three finishes in as many years at the Junior Olympics.

Synergy won the 16-under title in 2004 and took third in the 17-under division last year. The team's performance this year was as impressive as its title-winning effort two summers ago, mainly because it required Synergy to defeat long-time nemesis Balboa Bay Quicksilver quicksilver: see mercury.

``Would we rather have a gold medal instead of silver? Sure. But in the grand scheme of things we finished as the second best team in the country,'' said Goetz, who received all- tournament honors, along with Cornelius and Ker.

``Only one team was better. There are thousands and thousands of players and many teams that were in this tournament that would like to have accomplished what we did.''

Seaside's victory over Synergy in the final was its third in four meetings this year.

``We got torched in the first game. They made us look silly,'' Goetz said. ``We have a lot of pride though. We fought back. We weren't going to just give up.''

Looking forward: Several of Synergy's top players are moving on to college, but the future looks bright for Walt Ker, whose 16-under team took third at the Junior Olympics, losing to champion Balboa Bay Quicksilver 12-25, 25-13, 15-13 in the semifinals. Jamey Ker and Derrick Trent were all-tournament selections for Synergy, which placed third in the 15-under division last year.
