SYMPHONY SEASON PROMISES `MORE FUN' : SANTA SUSANA'S UNPRECEDENTED EIGHT-CONCERT SERIES TO START SUNDAY.

``More music, more listeners and more fun'' sums up the 1996-97 season anticipated by Santa Susana Santa Susana can refer to several places:
  • The Santa Susana Mountains in southern California
  • Santa Susana Pass, running through the abovementioned mountains
  • Santa Susana Field Laboratory, near Los Angeles, a test facility for rockets and (formerly) nuclear reactors
 Symphony Guild chairwoman Marty Mackel and orchestra conductor Philippe Fanjeaud.

Expanded to an unprecedented eight concerts, the series will begin at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  Cultural Arts Center with a program featuring works by Ravel, Debussy and Beethoven.

At 6:15 p.m. prior to each concert, ticket-holders are invited to ``Musical Notes'' in the multipurpose mul·ti·pur·pose

This Sunday's concert-goers will hear the orchestra play Ravel's Pavane pavane

Stately court dance introduced from southern Europe into England in the 16th century. The dance, consisting of forward and backward steps to music in duple time, was originally used to open ceremonial balls; later its steps became livelier and it came to be paired

Fanjeaud considers the Ravel selection representative of its composer's style. For the departure of the dead princess of his imagination, the composer makes majestic music suggested by the 16th century Italian court dances of the title.

Debussy's Petite Suite was written as a piano duet, said Fanjeaud, and includes four units: En bateau ba·teau also bat·teau

The Beethoven symphony is described by Fanjeaud as ``happy and humoristic,'' although written on commission at the troubled period in the composer's life.

A dinner benefit earlier this week was hosted by the officers and executive committee members: Chris Mays, Billee Gillibrand, Jeanne Canty, Mary Fasulo and Tom Mackel. Additional events are being planned, said chairwoman Mackel, ``. . . for fun and for funds.''

Season ticket-holders are invited to join the Guild, and may sign up Sunday evening. For more information about the organization, call chairwoman Mackel, 526-0818, or treasurer Barncard, 526-6968.

Single concert tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors, students and children, and $45 for a family including two or more children.

The new season ticket structure offers the entire eight-concert series for the price of seven, six concerts for the price of five or a block of four concerts. Subsequent concerts will be on the following Sundays: Oct. 27; Dec. 15, Jan. 19; Feb. 23; April 13; May 18; June 22.

Tickets may be ordered from the Cultural Arts Center's ticket office, 581-9940. A folder is also available with complete details, including the programs for all eight concerts.
