SYMBOL TO SUPPLY METRO INTERNATIONAL WITH BAR CODE SCANNING SYSTEMS

              SYMBOL TO SUPPLY METRO INTERNATIONAL
                WITH BAR CODE SCANNING SYSTEMS
BOHEMIA, N.Y., Feb. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Symbol Technologies Inc. (NYSE: SBL), the world leader in bar code-based data capture systems, today announced a $9.5 million agreement to supply Metro International with handheld bar code laser scanners and scanning data terminals.
Metro, headquartered in Switzerland, is one of the largest international retail/wholesale groups. Operating in 13 countries, Metro had 1991 revenue of $30 billion.
Metro will use the Symbol scanners and terminals for point-of- sale check out scanning and for a variety of in-store mobile data capture applications.
The Symbol LDT 3805, which integrates a laser scanner and a powerful microcomputer into a compact handheld unit, will be used by Metro in a new Pre-Check system. To reduce queueing time, an operator uses the LDT to scan the bar code on each article purchased while the customer is waiting to be checked out. The details are verified by the LDT and stored in memory. When the previous customer's transaction has been completed, the LDT downloads the "pre-checked" transaction, enabling the point-of-sale system to produce the customer's bill automatically without the operator having to re-scan any items.
"Metro is introducing this Pre-check system to speed checkout operations and to improve customer service," commented Dr. W. Schwetlick, Metro International AG board member responsible for information technology. "We selected Symbol as our strategic partner in implementing advanced bar code-based systems because their specialist products will allow us to fundamentally improve how we do business. We also wanted a supplier who could support our worldwide operations. Symbol has the international structure and experience to do this."
"We are very pleased to have been selected as a technology partner for Metro International," said Tomo Razmilovic, senior vice president, international operations, Symbol Technologies. "This reflects the growing importance of bar code laser scanning in Europe and Symbol's increasing leadership position in that marketplace."
Symbol Technologies Inc. is the world's largest supplier of bar code readers and data capture systems with more than one million scanners and terminals installed. The company manufactures and markets bar code reading equipment, hand held computers and radio frequency data communications products that are used as strategic building blocks in data collection systems for retail, manufacturing, distribution, transportation and many other industries.
