SYMBOL TECHNOLOGIES SUPPLIES SCANNER MODULES FOR UNITED PARCEL SERVICE TERMINAL; DIAD II Device To Be Used By UPS Drivers

BOHEMIA, N.Y., Nov. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Symbol Technologies Inc. (NYSE: SBL), the world leader in bar code-driven data transaction systems, today announced that it is providing a custom bar code laser scan engine for integration into the United Parcel Service (UPS) Delivery Information Device (DIAD II), a portable terminal used by drivers to capture data from bar-coded packages.
Symbol delivered 21,000 laser scanner modules for inclusion in DIAD II, a second-generation terminal that is half the size and weight of the original DIAD, for which Symbol also provided the scanner module and which was put into use by UPS in 1990.
The DIAD system allows UPS to rapidly and accurately collect data from bar coded packages, consignee signatures and other delivery information for more than 11 million packages daily. The portable hand- held device consists of a readable screen, signature capture pad, keyboard and Symbol-built integrated scanner. DIAD is used by approximately 60,000 UPS drivers to read bar codes placed on first-, second-day, selected ground and international packages.
UPS, headquartered in Atlanta, is the largest package distribution company in the world, with annual revenue of more than $16 billion. It tracks each bar-coded package through a network of ground and air distribution hubs to the final customer destination with a system that includes Symbol scanners, portable computing terminals and the DIAD.
"We've worked with UPS for more than a decade to develop scanning and data collection tools and solutions for improved productivity and customer service," said Raymond R. Martino, president and chief operating officer, Symbol Technologies. "UPS is dedicated to excellent customer service, and we're gratified that Symbol has been able to play a role in that effort."
Symbol Technologies is the world leader in bar code-based data transaction systems with more than two million scanners and terminals installed. The company designs, manufactures and markets bar code reading equipment, portable data terminals and radio frequency data communications products which are used as strategic building blocks in technology systems for retailing, package and parcel delivery, manufacturing, warehousing and distribution, health care and other industries.
