SYMBOL TECHNOLOGIES OFFERS BAR CODE-BASED SOLUTIONS FOR COMPUTERS ASSOCIATES CA-CAS MANUFACTURING SYSTEM

BOHEMIA, N.Y., Aug. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Symbol Technologies Inc. (NYSE: SBL), the world leader in bar code-driven data transaction systems, today announced that its family of bar code scanners, terminals, radio frequency data communications products and SymbolVision software are now supported by the Computer Associates CA-CAS manufacturing system from Computer Associates International (NYSE: CA).
Users of the CA-CAS manufacturing system can integrate bar code data capture solutions into their system. The entire Symbol product line is integrated into this solution giving CA-CAS users the capability of feeding their system with accurate, real-time data from anywhere within a manufacturing facility.
The addition of Symbol devices to the CA-CAS manufacturing system extends the existing architecture by adding bar code data capture solutions, but requires no system upgrades or changes. It allows users to enter data as it occurs on the manufacturing floor and enhances decision-support mechanisms.
CA-CAS is a comprehensive MRP II manufacturing system. The solution developed jointly by Computer Associates and Symbol allows a user to perform CA-CAS transactions from a Symbol device. This solution was developed for users running CA-CAS on an IBM mainframe, but can be expanded to other hosts.
Symbol and Computer Associates sales forces, along with value-added resellers, will offer the Symbol product line to users of the CA-CAS. The two Long Island, N.Y. companies announced a strategic alliance in May 1992 to enable CA clients to implement bar code-based solutions using Symbol products and services on their existing computer systems or platforms. The companies have shared technology, marketing and sales expertise.
"This joint offering allows customers of CA-CAS to add value by seamlessly integrating bar code data transaction solutions to a sophisticated MRP II manufacturing system," said Alan Gold, director strategic marketing, Symbol Technologies. "The addition of bar code data transaction to the CA-CAS environment empowers users with the ability to make real-time decisions affecting the manufacturing process as it occurs."
"Once again, CA and Symbol have partnered to bring together hardware and software technology," said John Capobianco, director business applications, Computer Associates. "Consistent with our Customer Focus Manufacturing strategy, CA-CAS clients will be able to respond more effectively to customer demand, streamline operations and make informed decisions quickly."
