SYMBOL TECHNOLOGIES INTRODUCES WORLD'S SMALLEST BAR CODE SCAN ENGINE; 15 COMPANIES SHOWCASE PRODUCTS FOR PDF 417,REVOLUTIONARY 2D SYMBOLOGY
BOHEMIA, N.Y., Oct. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Symbol Technologies Inc. (NYSE: SBL), the world leader in bar code-based data capture systems, today made a number of new product announcements that represent continuing advances in data transaction technology. In addition, 15 independent companies announced support for Symbol's PDF 417 two- dimensional symbology.
Among the announcements are a new software development tool for radio frequency based applications; the world's smallest bar code scan engine; and the most durable hand-held laser scanner for use in industrial environments.
The products are being introduced this week in Anaheim, Calif., at Scan-Tech, the trade show and seminar on automatic identification and data collection.
"The scope of these announcements underscores Symbol's technology leadership in 2D symbologies, laser bar code scanners and spread spectrum radio frequency communications," said Raymond R. Martino, president and chief operating officer, Symbol Technologies.
"Our customers tell us they rely on these technologically advanced products for data capture and data management so they, in turn, can serve their customers better. They're finding that these tools really do change the way they do business," Martino added.
Among today's announcements, Symbol and Informix Software Inc. announced INFORMIX-4GL/RF, a new software development tool for integrating RF data communications capability. Based on the Informix 4GL development tool, the new product allows "drop-in" integration with the Symbol Spectrum One RF data communications network. INFORMIX-4GL/RF is the first product to result from the Symbol/Informix strategic alliance announced in June 1992.
Symbol also introduced two new products to expand the boundaries of bar code scanning capabilities. The six-model LS 3000 family of rugged bar code scanners is designed for long-range scanning -- up to 30 feet -- in industrial applications in manufacturing, warehousing and distribution, transportation and parcel tracking.
To bring the accuracy and productivity of bar code scanning to third-party devices, Symbol introduced the SE 1000, the world's smallest scan engine. Measuring 0.75" x 1.5" x 0.95" and weighing less than one ounce, the SE 1000 is ideal for use in hand-held computers, medical instruments, diagnostic equipment, lottery terminals, vending machines and robotic devices.
 Industry Support for PDF 417
Fifteen vendors announced support for Symbol's PDF 417 two- dimensional symbology. PDF417 is the powerful new paper-based communications protocol for transferring a file's worth of data between computer systems without keying. PDF 417 also can be used as a high- density, high-capacity "portable data file" to provide low-cost access to large amounts of information without referencing an external database.
Companies announcing PDF 417 capability in printing systems and solutions include Analog Technology Corporation, Duarte, Calif.; Bell Data Network Communications Inc., Ann Arbor, Mich.; Cognitive Solutions, Atascadero, Calif.; Comtec Information Systems Inc., Cumberland, R.I.; Informix ID Systems, Norwood, Mass.; Monarch Marking Systems, Dayton, Ohio; Printronix, Irvine, Calif.; Strandware, Eau Claire, Wis.; and Zebra Technologies Corp., Vernon Hills, Ill.
New scanning systems for PDF 417 include those from Accu-Sort Systems Inc., Telford, Pa., and Bar Code Systems Inc., Atlanta.
Companies that have developed new customized applications integrating PDF 417 include NRM Computer Systems Inc., Pleasanton, Calif.; Qual/Soft Corporation, Manhattan Beach, Calif.; T4 Systems Inc., Little Rock, Ark.; and Vocam Systems, Bloomington, Minn.
Symbol Technologies is the world leader in bar code-based data capture systems with nearly two million scanners and terminals installed. The company designs, manufactures and markets bar code reading equipment, portable data terminals and radio frequency data communications products which are used as strategic building blocks in technology systems for retailing, package and parcel delivery, warehousing and distribution, manufacturing, health care and other industries.
