SYMBOL TECHNOLOGIES INTRODUCES ADVANCED PRODUCTS FOR RETAIL AUTOMATION SYSTEMS

BOHEMIA, N.Y., Jan. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Symbol Technologies Inc. (NYSE: SBL), the world leader in bar code-based data capture systems, introduced new products for the retail marketplace that further advance automated data management capabilities. The products are being demonstrated this week at the National Retail Federation Convention and Exposition in New York City.
Symbol introduced a wireless point-of-sale system that enables IBM 4683 series POS terminals to operate without traditional cable-based connections and with standard IBM application packages; a software system that lets retailers use standard IBM applications software on the Symbol SpeedChek portable POS terminal; and a new hand-held laser bar code scanner that offers the highest performance in the marketplace.
The wireless POS system consists of a board snapped into the feature card slot of the IBM 4683 series register, estimated to be in use at 60 percent of all North American stores, and a companion board inserted into the IBM 4680 store controller. It allows wired and wireless POS terminals to operate simultaneously along with other Symbol data management devices on the Symbol Spectrum One(R) radio frequency network without modification of existing
applications software. Retailers can move existing registers or add wireless registers during peak sales times.
The software package -- IBM 4683 terminal application support for the Symbol SpeedChek (SPC 3430) DOS-based wireless hand-held POS terminal -- lets retailers download and execute standard applications such as GSA, SSA and SA, the most popular retail software packages from IBM, as well as develop new applications on the Symbol platform.
The new bar code scanner, the next-generation LS 2000 II, is ideally suited for POS, portable in-store scanning and receiving and backroom scanning applications. It scans from contact out to 35 inches and offers superior performance and decode aggressiveness over a range of bar code densities; it can read even poorly printed symbols and decode even under conditions of high ambient light.
The "wireless store" environment afforded by the Spectrum One RF network, which requires no FCC site license, lets retailers reposition POS terminals for special promotions and sales. It eliminates wiring costs for traditional POS terminal installation and costs for store renovations when registers are repositioned.
"In this 'wireless store' environment, retailers have the flexibility to enhance customer service by responding to peak, high- volume sales traffic with a customized register layout," said Raymond R. Martino, president, Symbol Technologies.
Symbol SpeedChek, weighing less than five pounds, is the latest in the Symbol family of integrated products supported by Symbol's patented Spectrum One(R) high-speed network now installed at more than 4,000 sites.
Symbol Technologies is the world leader in bar code-based data capture systems with 2 million scanners and terminals installed. The company designs, manufactures and markets bar code reading equipment, portable data terminals and radio frequency data communications products which are used as strategic building blocks in technology systems for retail, manufacturing, package and parcel delivery, warehousing and distribution, health care and other industries.
