SYMBOL TECHNOLOGIES ANNOUNCES CONTRACT WITH WESTERN CANADA LOTTERY CORP.
BOHEMIA, N.Y., June 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Symbol Technologies, Inc. (NYSE: SBL), the world leader in bar code based data capture systems, today announced that it will supply a customized laser scanner to the Western Canada Lottery Corp. to read and validate bar coded instant lottery tickets sold by retailers in the Canadian provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Yukon and the Northwest Territories.
The $1.1 million contract calls for Symbol Technologies to provide a specially designed fixed mount scanner, which will allow Western Canada Lottery Corp. lottery ticket vendors to instantly verify winning instant tickets. The LS 2930, a fixed mount scanner with integrated RS232 interface, will connect to on-line lottery terminals located at individual lottery outlets and will verify the ticket bar code of winning tickets on-line with Western Canada Lottery's host computer located in Winnipeg.
Each lottery ticket contains an individual identifying serial number and corresponding bar code.
"We're scanning each winning ticket to improve accuracy and service to both our product retailers and customers," explained Darryl Sangster, senior manager of research and technical support, Western Canada Lottery Corp. "Scanning makes on-line validation practical. It's also the enabling technology that will revolutionize our distribution and sales tracking of lottery tickets.
Scanning virtually eliminates fraudulent claims, lottery officials noted. The system instantly identifies any attempt to pass altered or duplicated lottery tickets.
There are more than 3,000 lottery ticket retailers in the Western Canada Lottery retail network.
"We opted for laser scanning bar code reading technology over CCDs and wands for a number of reasons," Sangster added. "The scanners have a better first read rate and can read damaged bar codes better than wands or CCDs. Wand readers simply failed to meet our performance requirements. CCDs have fixed apertures and that limits our future design of tickets because the bar code must be of certain attributes."
Symbol Technologies is the world leader in bar code based data capture systems with nearly two million scanners and terminals installed. The company designs, manufactures and markets bar code reading equipment, portable data terminals and radio frequency data communications products which are used as strategic building blocks in technology systems for retailing, package and parcel delivery, manufacturing, health care and other industries.
