    SYMBOL TECHNOLOGIES ANNOUNCES CONTRACT WITH CALIFORNIA LOTTERY
    BOHEMIA, N.Y., Oct. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Symbol Technologies Inc. (NYSE: SBL), the world leader in bar code-based data capture systems, today announced that it will supply laser scanners to the California Lottery to read and validate barcoded Scratcher tickets sold by Lottery retailers throughout the state.
    The Symbol LS 2930, a fixed-mount scanner with integrated RS232 interface, will connect to online Lottery terminals at 10,000 individual Lottery retailers throughout California and will verify the bar code of winning tickets with the California Lottery's host computer.  Each Scratcher ticket carries an individual identifying serial number and corresponding bar code.
    Scanning of winning Scratcher tickets prevents fraudulent claims that can occur if someone attempts to cash a ticket more than once or to falsify play symbols on a ticket.

    The Symbol LS 2930 design is especially suited to lottery applications because of its aggressive scanning capabilities, compact size and low cost.
