SYMBOL INTRODUCES PDT 3100 SCANNER-INTEGRATED TERMINAL

BOHEMIA, N.Y., June 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Symbol Technologies Inc. (NYSE: SBL), the world leader in bar code-driven data transaction systems, today introduced the Symbol PDT 3100, a full-function yet cost- effective laser scanner-integrated data terminal.
The device is the latest additional to Symbol's extensive scanner- integrated terminal product line, which includes the popular Laser Radio Terminal (LRT 3800) and Portable Data Terminal 3300 (PDT 3300).
The PDT 3100 is geared to markets having terminal function requirements that require scanning capabilities, especially package tracking, electronic ordering, freight tracking and asset and item tracking applications.
The PDT 3100 is lightweight and compact; at 14 ounces and eight inches in length by two 1/2 inches in width, it fits comfortably in the hand. Its ergonomic design enhances productivity and ease of use: the side-mounted laser-scanner trigger lets the operator select the most comfortable position and the alpha key functions with a single keystroke.
The PDT 3100 is available in two configurations: as either a 16-bit DOS base terminal or with an integrated laser scanning unit. The integrated scanning model can support a contact scanner or tethered laser scanner. The integrated model includes a pivot-mounted laser scanner that adjusts for right- or left-handed use with the press of a button.
"We designed the PDT 3100 for the customer who wants the flexibility and ease of use of an integrated scanning terminal in a cost effective, full-function device," said Raymond R. Martino, president and chief operating officer, Symbol Technologies. "It's ideal for distribution, retail and food retail markets."
The laser scanner component adds less than two ounces and only 3/4 inch of the PDT 3100. This diminutive size is made possible by incorporation of the Symbol SE 1000, the world's smallest scan engine. The small but powerful scanner has a range of two to 20 inches.
The 16-bit DOS base terminal features 640 KB of RAM, 256 KB of application storage space, a four-line back-lit display and a 35-key keyboard. When not is use, the PDT 3100 fits securely in a single slot cradle for data communication to the host system and for charging. The PDT 3100 is designed to operate in a scan-intensive environment for a full 10 hours without recharging.
List price of the PDT 3100 base unit is $1,195; list price of the PDT 3100 with integrated laser scanner is $1,795. The Symbol PDT 3100 will be available August 1993.
Symbol Technologies is the world leader in bar code-driven data transaction systems with more than 2 million scanners and terminals installed. The company designs, manufactures and markets bar code reading equipment, portable data terminals and radio frequency data communications products which are used as strategic building blocks in information systems for retail, manufacturing, package and parcel delivery, warehousing and distribution, health care and other industries.
