SYMBOL ANNOUNCES CONTRACT TO SUPPLY 10,500 SCANNERS AND
 TERMINALS FOR UNITED PARCEL SERVICE
BOHEMIA, N.Y., April 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Symbol Technologies Inc. (NYSE:SBL) today announced that it will provide United Parcel Service (UPS) with more than 5,000 Symbol hand-held laser bar code scanners and portable computer terminals to enhance its existing data capture capabilities.
The contract calls for Symbol to deliver 5,250 LS 8500 scanners and 5,250 16-bit PDT 3300 portable data terminals to track an increasing daily volume of packages. UPS already uses Symbol scanners and computer terminals for package tracking in its sorting hubs as part of its overall system to ensure quality customer service and efficient package delivery.
UPS also incorporates the Symbol laser scanner module in its Delivery Information Acquisition Device (DIAD), used by approximately 60,000 UPS drivers to collect data from bar-coded packages delivered daily throughout the world. UPS has been using Symbol portable data terminals and bar code readers for nearly 10 years.
The Symbol terminals were chosen for their large memory capacity, fast processors and proven durability.
Based in Atlanta, UPS is the largest package delivery company in the world, with annual revenues of more than $15 billion. UPS provides overnight and international package delivery. It tracks each bar-coded package through its network of ground and air distribution hubs to the final destination with a system that includes Symbol scanners, terminals and the DIAD.
"We are gratified that Symbol has been able to play a role in UPS' dedication to excellent customer service," said Raymond Martino, president and chief operating officer, Symbol Technologies. "We've worked closely with UPS to develop advanced scanning and data collection tools for improved productivity and customer service."
Symbol Technologies is the world leader in bar code-based data capture systems with nearly two million scanners and terminals installed. The company designs, manufactures and markets bar code reading equipment, hand-held computers and radio frequency data communications products which are used as strategic building blocks in data transaction systems for retail, manufacturing, warehousing and distribution, transportation and many other industries.
