New Solution Provides Maximum Performance and Flexibility

by Offering Two Key Technologies in a Single-Chip Solution -

Responding to OEMs' needs for increased I/O (Input/Output) The transfer of data between the CPU and a peripheral device. Every transfer is an output from one device and an input to another. See PC input/output.

I/O - Input/Output
performance while preserving critical PCI bus loads, Symbios Logic Inc. announced today the industry's first true PCI (1) (Payment Card Industry) See PCI DSS.

(2) (Peripheral Component Interconnect) The most widely used I/O bus (peripheral bus).
 - SCSI/Fast Ethernet multi- function controller. Fully adhering to the PCI specification, the SYM53C885 delivers two technologies while presenting only one electrical load to the system. The SYM53C885 controller is the latest member of Symbios Logic's family of multi-function I/O solutions, joining the recently announced SYM53C876 PCI - Dual Channel SCSI SCSI
in full Small Computer System Interface

Once common standard for connecting peripheral devices (disks, modems, printers, etc.) to small and medium-sized computers. SCSI has given way to faster standards, such as Firewire and USB.
multi-function controller and associated SYM22801/2 host adapters.

The SYM53C885 is targeted at the workstation, server and NT desktop markets in which OEMs require high performance SCSI and Fast Ethernet as every-unit items or as add-on options. The SYM53C885 controller combines both Wide Ultra SCSI and 10/100 Mbit/sec Ethernet functions to provide a complete solution with maximum I/O performance and flexibility. This single-chip solution reduces the number of PCI bus loads and requires less space on the motherboard compared with two-chip solutions. With the new SYM53C885 technology, OEMs are able to improve system performance through advanced features such as a large SCSI SCRIPTS(TM) RAM and Ethernet Descriptor-Based DMA (1) (Digital Media Adapter) See digital media hub.

(2) (Document Management Alliance) A specification that provides a common interface for accessing and searching document databases.
(DBDMA DBDMA Descriptor Based Dma ) transmit and receive engines.

"The SYM53C885 combines Symbios Logic's proven SCSI expertise and leadership with Ethernet functionality to meet the increasing bandwidth demands of the client and server marketplace," said Tom Lagatta, vice president of corporate marketing and business development for Symbios Logic. "Continuing our commitment to provide complete I/O solutions, we have partnered with the industry's top developers of Ethernet hardware and software technology to provide this robust, full featured product."

Ethernet features include:

o Separate high-performance transmit and receive DBDMA channels

-- for full duplex 10/100 Mbit/sec operation and to reduce PCI

bus overhead and the number of CPU CPU
 in full central processing unit

Principal component of a digital computer, composed of a control unit, an instruction-decoding unit, and an arithmetic-logic unit.
 interrupts

o Separate 3KB transmit and receive FIFOs -- enhancing the

performance of the full duplex operation

o Early transmit/early receive feature -- increasing throughput

o Bursts up to 128 dwords across PCI bus -- for maximum

performance

o TP-PMD (Twisted Pair-Physical Medium Dependent) An ANSI standard for an FDDI network that uses UTP instead of optical fiber. See CDDI.  (symbol) interface -- for a low cost 100BASE-TX solution

o MII 1. (body) MII - A consortium of Microsoft, IBM, and Intel.

2. (storage) MII - A broadcast component video tape format licensed by Panasonic.
interface -- for 10BASE-T and 100BASE-T support using just

one RJ-45 connector

SCSI features include:

o 16-bit, single-ended Ultra (Fast-20) SCSI design -- for

synchronous data transfer rates up to 40 MBytes/sec

o Integrated 4K RAM for SCSI SCRIPTS storage -- saving PCI

bandwidth for other tasks

o Bursts up to 128 dwords across PCI bus using 536 byte DMA FIFO (First In First Out) A storage method that retrieves the item stored for the longest time. Contrast with LIFO. See traffic engineering methods.

FIFO - first-in first-out

-- improving system performance by decreasing PCI access

o Expansion Flash ROM interface for local BIOS or SCRIPTS

programs

o Supports PCI extended access cycles -- taking advantage of

PCI's performance

o Software drivers and SCRIPTS compatible with SYM53C825A and

SYM53C875 -- helps designers leverage existing SCSI hardware and

software designs

The SYM53C885 also includes JTAG (Joint Test Action Group) An IEEE standard for boundary scan technology. See scan technology.

JTAG - Joint Test Action Group
boundary scan, and power management features on both the SCSI and the Ethernet side, including Magic PacketTM technology for remote wake up. The device is packaged in a 160-pin PQFP (Plastic Quad Flat Package) Refers to many varieties of QFP chip packages, which are molded in plastic. See QFP.  and is available with a complete set of SCSI and Ethernet drivers.

Sample chips will be available in the first quarter of 1997. Pricing is $49.90 in quanitities of 10,000.
