SYMANTEC SPONSORS BRUCE JENNER CLASSIC; COMPANY SUPPORTS
TRACK AND FIELD EVENT FOR SECOND CONSECUTIVE YEAR
CUPERTINO, Calif., May 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Symantec Corp. (NASDAQ: SYMC) today announced its sponsorship of the 15th annual Bruce Jenner Classic, the final major track and field event prior to the 1992 U.S. Olympic Trials. The Classic will be held on Saturday, May 30 at San Jose City College. The company also announced that the results of each event will be tabulated by Symantec's Q&A(R) database software program.
"In this Olympic year, Symantec salutes athletes worldwide whose commitment to excellence equals our own," said John C. Laing, Symantec's executive vice president of worldwide sales. "It is their spirit of determination, dedication and desire that makes us proud to sponsor the Bruce Jenner Symantec Classic for the second consecutive year.
"We are also pleased that one of our top performers, Q&A, is being used in the Classic to keep track of the world's top performers in track and field." Symantec's Q&A to Provide Immediate Event Results
Symantec's popular database and word processing package, Q&A, will have two main functions at the Classic. It will handle event logistics to allow for quick and easy manipulation of rapidly changing event data. Q&A will also simplify what has historically been a problem in events of this size: getting results out quickly, accurately and in an easy-to-understand format. Competition results will be entered into a pre-formatted Q&A database to immediately provide sportscasters, spectators and participants with an easy-to- read display of the final results. Symantec Employee to Compete
August Wolf, a distribution sales manager at Symantec, will be competing in the shot put event at the Bruce Jenner Symantec Classic. Wolf finished fourth in the shot put event at the 1984 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles and is currently training for a spot on the 1992 U.S. Olympic team. In addition, Wolf is the driving force behind fundraising efforts for the Classic.
Since 1977, the Bruce Jenner Classic has been the premier U.S. showcase for top track and field competitors worldwide. More than 300 athletes from over 30 countries will compete in this year's event including Mike Powell (United States), world record holder in the long jump; Dan O'Brien (United States), world champion and American record holder in the decathlon; Jackie Joyner-Kersee (United States), world record holder in the Olympic heptathlon; Sergei Smirnov (Commonwealth of Independent States), record holder in the shot put; Wolfgang Schmidt (Germany), Olympic silver medalist in the discus; and Patti- Sue Plummer (United States), ranked number one in the world at both 3,000 and 5,000 meters. The event will be televised in the United States and in more than 100 other countries.
