SYMANTEC MOVES CUSTOMER SUPPORT FUNCTIONS TO OREGON; CONSOLIDATION TO IMPROVE CUSTOMER SERVICES AND DECREASE OPERATING COSTS

CUPERTINO, Calif., June 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Symantec Corp. (NASDAQ: SYMC) today announced that it is consolidating four of its technical support and customer service departments and will relocate the new organization to Eugene, Ore. to provide improved and consistent service and support for customers and decrease operating expenses. The relocation will begin in September and will be completed by the end of the year.
The organization will be run by Dana E. Siebert, Symantec's vice president of services. Siebert was vice president of international sales before his promotion to this new position. He will report to Gordon E. Eubanks Jr., Symantec's president and chief executive officer.
"As we continue to add products to a very diverse product line, it is increasingly difficult to maintain a consistent level of technical and customer support, particularly when these functions are located in different areas," said Siebert. "By combining these departments at one location, we'll be able to offer customers a higher level of service and performance by providing employees with consistent training methods and communications skills. The consolidation will also enable us to cross- train our support people on other products, increasing our responsiveness and efficiency significantly."
"We are excited about Symantec choosing Eugene for this new operation," said John D. Lively, executive director, Eugene/Springfield Metropolitan Partnership Inc. "This complements well the local and statewide software industry, and provides exciting new opportunities for the Eugene employment base."
Symantec develops, markets and supports more than 40 software products in the utilities, project management, productivity applications, development tools and contact management categories. The company has facilities in Cupertino, Sunnyvale, Santa Monica and Novato, all located in California, and in Bedford, Mass. Full-time technical support and customer service employees will be offered positions in Eugene. The company's California-based employees will begin moving in September; Bedford-based employees will begin relocating in the second calendar quarter of 1994. The company employs 160 people in customer support functions and a total of 1,200 people worldwide.
"The consolidation will enable us to build the best service and support organization in the software industry, offer superior and consistent service to all customers, and help us achieve our goal of minimizing operating costs as we continue to grow," added Siebert. "It is an exciting opportunity for our service support employees." The company will have a one-time charge of approximately $4.7 million in the June quarter associated with the relocation, and expects an annual savings of $2 million by consolidating and moving its service operations to Oregon. The service group will be located in temporary housing until negotiations for a permanent facility are completed.
