The Spartans' front-row attackers were responsible for most of the sideouts. However, it was Sylmar's tough serving that was the key to earning points and sealing the win. Sylmar had 14 service aces.

With the victory, the Spartans advance to Wednesday's quarterfinals, in which they host the winner of the North Hollywood-Fremont match.

``I'm going to have to say that our serves and better defense did it for us, but we're going to have to play better defense to make it to the finals. We're going to have to get pumped up and get the butterflies out before.''
