SYLMAR PROVES SUPERIOR; CONTRERAS STARS VS. SAN FERNANDO : SYLMAR 31, SAN FERNANDO 6.

Byline: Gerry Gittelson Staff Writer

For Sylmar High linebacker Mark Sutton, football is a simple game: ``I hit my man as hard as I can and he does move backwards,'' he said.

The plan worked on a grand scale against previously undefeated San Fernando San Fernando, city, Argentina

Sutton won't get an argument from San Fernando. His Spartans dominated from the start and allowed 263 yards - just 173 through three quarters.

The victory forces a three-way tie for first place in the Valley Mission League among Sylmar, San Fernando and Kennedy. All three are expected to make the City Championship playoffs when pairings are announced today.

Sylmar running back David Contreras rushed for 112 yards in 19 carries, threw a 20-yard touchdown pass and kicked a 37-yard field goal. Teammate John Valdez completed 7 of 9 passes for 145 yards, including a 52-yard touchdown to Clifford Johnson, and Valdez added 78 yards rushing and a TD. Valdez also contributed an interception in his first start on defense, replacing injured in·jure

Their last meeting was in 1991, when Sylmar knocked the Tigers out of the City 4A playoffs 31-7.

``We came out here to win,'' Johnson said. ``We played great as a team, left it all out on the field and that's why we won.''

San Fernando's Thomas Hoohuli completed 13 of 28 passes for 145 yards and two interceptions. Bobby Stanley rushed for 82 yards in 15 carries.

Sylmar pressured Hoolhuli with a strong inside rush and came with some jarring hits in the secondary. Contreras was particularly impressive on defense, breaking up several passes and returning an interception 71 yards.

``We were very well prepared and we played a great defensive game,'' Sylmar coach Jeff Engilman said. ``It's been a long season, but the crowd definitely helped us tonight.''
