SYLMAR HAS EYE ON TITLE, REVENGE MATCHUP WITH KENNEDY COULD BE GAME OF THE YEAR IN AREA.

Byline: Gerry Gittelson Staff Writer

Sylmar sure wants another another crack at Kennedy.

Not only did the Golden Cougars end the Spartans' league winning streak Noun 1. winning streak - a streak of wins

at 69 games with a one-point victory last October, they also eliminated Sylmar in first round of the playoffs - by a score of 69-33.

The teams meet again on Oct. 20 in what figures to be the season's highlight.

``Our guys are definitely anxious to play them again,'' Sylmar coach Jeff Engilman said. ``I wouldn't want a player on our team who wasn't. I wouldn't exactly say we're looking for Looking for

revenge, but our guys took that last loss pretty darn hard.''

Based on returning talent, Sylmar (7-4 last year) is the league favorite - and perhaps the favorite to win the City Championship title. Linebacker Josh Martin is the Daily News No. 1 linebacker, a 6-2, 220-pounder with an appetite for destruction. John Valdez, who passed for 1,156 yards and eight touchdowns and also ran for eight touchdowns last year, is the league's only experienced quarterback. DBs Donnell Livingston and Phil Samano, OL Richard Del Gaudio and 240-pound FB/LB Isidro Medina are All-City candidates.

Kennedy (8-4) succeeded with its new wide-open passing offense last year. The biggest concern is replacing Ruben Zaragoza, who passed for 3,289 yards and 38 touchdowns. Junior Adam Geery, a proven baseball pitcher, is the likely starter. The good news for him is James Norris' return. Norris had 87 receptions (14.0 avg.) and 24 touchdowns last season, the region's most impressive performance in recent memory. Robert Avino (6-1, 240), one of the league's best athletes, switches from tackle to TE and should help.

(9-2) hopes to maintain momentum after its best season in two decades. If RB Bobby Stanley fully recovers from offseason knee surgery, he could carry the Tigers.

Stanley, a 6-1, 225-pounder, ran for 1,089 yards (6.4 avg.) and 13 TDs despite missing four games. Junior Ruben Nevarez, brother of graduated All-Daily News OL Steve Nevarez, is a 6-5, 215-pound QB. He looked good as a freshman but didn't play last season. Linebacker Eddie Martinez Eddie Martinez is a guitarist who mainly functions as a session musician. He has worked with David Lee Roth (on Crazy from the Heat), Run-D.M.C. (on Run-D.M.C.  (6-1, 220) is the top hitter.

Van Nuys (1-9) doesn't figure to challenge, although K Johan Colocho and DB Obel Pulido are exceptional.
